WATCH: Behind the Crime

Are there enough women in police dramas?

Are women represented correctly in these police dramas?

What does it take to make police dramas look so realistic?

Final year Television Production and Journalism student Courtney Andrews answers these questions with this brilliant documentary produced for her Media Production Dissertation.

From research to scripting, interviewing, shooting and through to final edit, Courtney undertook the whole production process to explore how popular police dramas Line of Duty, Prime Suspect and Happy Valley always seem to get it right.

The shows have been credited with portraying more women as leading figures within the British crime drama genre.

Courtney exclusively interviews Happy Valley executive producer Nicola Schindler and Line of Duty Creator Jed Mercurio along with police advisors from the TV dramas to see how real life scenarios are recreated in front of the camera.
