Turning guest sessions into published work

A first year BA Sports Journalism student made the most of a guest session to achieve his first professional byline.

Basketball enthusiast Vlad Ionasc was in his element when Cheshire Phoenix coach Ben Thomas visited the Parkgate Road campus where students interviewed him as part of the Sports Writing module.

Such was the quality of Vlad’s quotes-piece with Ben that module tutor and senior lecturer in Sports Journalism Paul Hassall sent the article to the Cheshire Live sports desk who were more than happy to publish it.

The BA Sports Journalism course provides hands-on experience that can lead to students seeing their work published by professional media outlets

This is the first time Vlad has had his work published by a professional title and is an example of how the Sports Journalism course aligns with industry to help students make contacts and develop skills to build their portfolio’s.

What’s more, Vlad has been invited to intern with Cheshire Phoenix in a social media and digital content production role.
